Man is a microcosm. Whatever exists in the outer universe exists in him. All the elements (tattvas) and the worlds are within him and so is the Supreme Energy. The body may be divided into two main parts, namely, the head and the trunk on the one hand and the legs on the other. In man, the center of the body is between these two, at the base of the spine. Supporting the trunk and throughout the whole body there is the spinal chord. This is the axis of the body.
From the pelvic cavity upwards, consciousness manifests more freely through the spinal and cerebral centers. This region is categorized in seven (upper) sub-regions. The sub-regions correspond to seven chakras; five in the trunk area, the sixth in the lower cerebral and the seventh (soft spot) in the upper brain.
The seven sub-regions and the corresponding chakras have been given names as follows :
Sub-regions: Bhur, Bhuvah, Svah, Tapa, Jana, Maha and Satya
Chakras: Muladhara, Svadhishthan, Manipur, Anahata, Vishuddha, Ajna and Sahasrara
Muladhara is situated at the base of the spinal column (Bhur sub-region); above it, at various locations of the spinal column, corresponding to the genitals, the navel, base of the heart, the throat, the forehead (between the two eye brows), are the Svadhishthan, Manipur, Anahata, Vishuddha, Ajna. Sahasrara chakras. The seat of Supreme Consciousness, is at the top in the upper brain - a point that can be noticed prominently and is known to all mothers as the 'soft spot' in a child (infant). The supreme energy or consciousness though is every where within and without the body but, in a state of profound meditation, a human being realizes it in the Sahasrara (cerebrum).
